Description

The Royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Ecuador (Reino de Ecuador) are, on a gold field, an inescutcheon depicting the arms of House Orléans superimposed on a cross of the Order of Calatrava, and illuminated by the rays of the Inca sun god, Inti, all encircled by 22 silver stars on a blue circle. The arms are supported by an Andean condor, behind which is a white Cross of Burgundy, used by rebels during the 1809 Quiteñan Revolution against the Spanish.

In 1846, plans were pursued by the exiled President of Ecuador, Juan José Flores, for an invasion of the country and for its transformation into a monarchy. He obtained support and financing from María Cristina de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, Queen Regent of Spain, in order to place on the Ecuadorian throne her son, Agustín Muñoz y Borbón. After his declaration as King of Ecuador, with his mother and Flores as Regents, he would also be declared Restorer of the monarchy in Peru and Bolivia: essentially, he would become monarch of the tentative United Kingdom of the Andes.

There was also talk of negotiations with Louis-Philippe, King of the French, to offer the Throne of Ecuador to his tenth and youngest son, Antoine d'Orléans, Duke of Montpensier, Knight of Calatrava, and husband of the Spanish infanta Luisa Fernanda de Borbón, daughter of the aforementioned Queen Regent of Spain, Maria Cristina.
