Description

DISCLAIMER: ALTERNATE HISTORY. Occitans are not all fascist, obviously. I just thought the following fact was curious:

Has anyone ever noticed that the borders of Vichy France and Occitania are nearly exact?

... Probably just a coincidence. I imagine the Germans wanted to control France proper to stave off any invasion from Britain, so they decided to just leave the south to Petain, 'cuz it's not like they're coming that way!

Anyway. Flag time! The stylized francisca (throwing axe) was the symbol of the fascist and anti-semitic French Popular Party (PPF), and was probably the most collaborationist faction in France itself, presumably participating in the execution of the Holocaust. In TTL, as a Neo-Cathar state, Vichy Occitania also implemented harsh anti-Catholic measures as vengeance for the Albigensian Crusade of the early 13th century. The flag of the Chief of State reflects its gnostic heritage: a pair of doves that are associated with Esclarmonde of Foix, a prominent Cathar figure and who, according to folklore, transformed into a dove to carry the Holy Grail away from the Catholics besieging Montségur in 1243. The yellow cross is reminiscent of those sewn onto the garments of Cathars that recanted and rejoined the Catholic Church. The Occitan cross, a symbol of the Counts of Tolosa (Toulouse), was a "Cathar rallying symbol" during the Crusade itself.

Regarding territory: Occitania would very much like a port on the Atlantic in the form of the Aquitaine coastline, but the Germans are still rather wary of letting them take over just yet, what with the Brits still prowling the waves and all. Spain is currently in possession of the Aran Valley in Catalonia, though given their shared fascist leanings, that can probably be negotiated for later on, maybe trade it for the Catalan city of Perpinyà (Perpignan). The Languedoc's greatest ambitions lie in Italy: the Occitan Valleys of the Italian Alps. Occitania's already formally ceded control of Corsica to the Duce, but the final status of the valleys themselves are still being debated. (And, uh, they'll probably just take over Monaco at some point...)
