The Oriflamme ("golden flame") was the scarlet battle standard of the King of France during the medieval period.
The golden flames represent the absolute monarchy of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and his descendants, the rightful Kings of France- the moon (and its eclipsing of the sun) represent the current Republic, and its offspring: the Orléanists and the Bonapartists. (The crux of the flag is that solar eclipses are very fleeting: the House of Bourbon endures.)

Very clever symbolism.
Also terrifying to anyone who might be considered an enemy of the Royals, contemplating the end of the "eclipse", considering that in addition to signifying that the King is present at the battle, it is also the "no quarter" sign: Take No Prisoners . . . .
